Alan Wearne is a poet and CEO of Grand Parade Poets. He regards The Gang of One as among the most major volumes of Australian Poetry to be published so far this century. At the Melbourne launch of Robert’s The Cloud Passes Over Alan saw him reading his poetry by heart, a feat he had never seen before, nor has since.

John Jenkins was one of Robert’s many friends in the Melbourne and Sydney poetry worlds. One evening both poets wandered into the Paperback Bookshop where Alan Wearne was serving behind the counter. They were drunk, though not too drunk.

Jenny O’Driscoll was Robert’s partner for eight years. They remained close friends and she was instrumental in his conversion not to a particular brand of Christianity but, as she says, ‘…in the sense of how a real relationship with God comes through what Jesus did for him on the cross, personally.’
